A fresh portraiture direction

I had the idea of wanting to try people portraiture for a few years. Animal portraiture is a well worn path for me now, and I had been producing them since 2001. But this idea would not go, it stayed with me and this was more about who or what subject I should try portraying. Roger Sutton of Newfields Gallery in East Staffordshire should be something I paint regardless of not being a human portrait painter.

This was an experiment in acrylic paint on board which is new to me. I started it in February 2024. The drawing out of perspective over a wide area in a confined space within his workshop took 15 or so hours to get right, with the whole painting taking about 200 hours or more to complete. I worked off many photographs and had to overexpose and underexpose the the source photos with an SLR camera and phone camera to obtain a lot of the shadowy details in the scene. I finished the painting in August 2025. I also worked on the painting whilst at the Broadway Festival in 2025.

The painting first made its appearance at Wirksworth Festival on the art and architecture trail and is now at the 2025 Art Competition Exhibition of Finalists.
