My favourite expression of detail is drawing a horse in action. Most owners would say that a good sharp, well framed action picture of them riding is most appealing.

The muscle tone, bone structure, sweaty reflective coat, and all the different textures, makes it a more interesting challenge as an artist. Like any sport, riding is as involved and skilled as you want it to be. It is the contrast between the polished sportsperson and the earthy, dirty, hard work that appeals to me, both as an artist
and a rider.

Riding a horse well is an art form, and it is beautiful to watch. It is the propotions and the detail that make it so. This is why the horse is so admired and so challenging to artists. All horses have that magical attraction, whether covered in mud in a field or immaculately turned out for a show. The finished portrait is a very personal choice for the client and as the artist I can advise but only they know the animal and how they would like it to be portrayed.
